2000 riot over Apple’s iphone

2000 people rioted today, at least 40 people were injured & thousands of police were called to quell the upsurge. This wasn’t on the High St but at Apple’s main manufacturing site, Foxconn, in China.

Whilst Apple disciples queued at Western Apple stores to purchase the latest iconic product workers on the other side of the world were embroiled in a mass brawl.

This isn’t the first time Foxconn has been involved in controversy – there was massive concern over a number of workers suicides allegedly related to the companies working conditions.

Companies need to chose their outsource partners with great care, the repercussions could be more than financial.

Voyager………#innovation boldy going on & on & on

The spacecraft Voyager 1 is the furthest man made object from Earth & is miraculously still transmitting data 0ver 35 years after it’s launch in 1977.

As it travels out of the solar system and heads for deep space we can only marvel at the journey of this object which has passed close to the asteroid belt, Jupiter & Saturn and has provided extensive scientific knowledge about our solar system.

It is well worth reminding ourselves of Innovation back on Planet Earth since  1977.

The first commercially available mobile phone went on sale in 1983.

The Internet was in it’s infancy in 1977 & didn’t become widely available until the 1990’s.

The World Wide Web did not exist until 1991.

The first commercially available personal computers only appeared in the late 1970’s & had a fraction of the computing power of today’s machines.

This makes the achievements of the  Voyager programme all the more remarkable.

#Auto output drives toward production record

The UK automotive industry is set to break its all time production record of 1.92 million cars (set in 1970!!) in 2015. These figures are from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders.

This success is hard won and it has been a long upward climb to return to the heights of the 1970’s. It is hard to believe that UK auto manufacturing then represented approximately a 10% world share. Now it is just over 2%.

A heck of a lot of ground was lost following the 1973 oil crisis and the gradual decline of British Leyland.

Success now depends on innovative Product Design. Take a look at Jaguar Land Rover’s Evoque (see above) which has sold over 100,000 units in it’s first year and has led to 24/7 manufacture at the Halewood plant.

Another great example is BMW’s mini which is turned out at it’s expanded Oxford plant.

Manufacturing in the UK Automotive industry has been revolutionized since the sad days of the 1970’s, much of this led by Nissan in the North East with  the adoption of Japanese manufacturing techniques such as LEAN & JIT.

If we can capitalize on current success the UK Automotive industry has a terrific future.
