(parts per million).\u00a0 The term six sigma refers to the fact that a process in statistical control has six times the standard deviation between the mean and Lower (or Upper) control limit. (see below)\u00a0 i.e. it is a tight, centered distribution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Six Sigma is particularly important when Designing For Manufacture. The product should be designed with the manufacturing process in mind such that it results in a product which is centered on\u00a0 the customer expectations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">This results in a manufacturing process which generates products with minimal defects. Rather than using the Upper and Lower Spec limit as a filter to &#8220;chop off&#8221; bad products the product variance is minimized so that the product characteristics are centered on the ideal and the rate of defects is minimized to less than 4ppm.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberhill.biz\/6Sigma_distribution.jpg\" width=\"507\" height=\"365\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Achieving this level of success requires concerted effort and commitment throughout the organization and the application of tools such as SPC (Statistical Process Control), DFMEA (Design Failure Modes Effect Analysis), QFD (Quality Function Deployment) and many others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Successful Six Sigma also demands close working and control of suppliers and partners to minimize defects and reduce incoming inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Six Sigma projects follow two project methodologies inspired by Deming&#8217;s Plan Do Check Act cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u00a0These methodologies, composed of five phases each, bear the acronyms DMAIC and DMADV.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\">DMAIC is used for projects aimed at improving an existing business process. DMAIC is pronounced as &#8220;duh-may-ick&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: large;\">DMADV is used for projects aimed at creating new product or process designs DMADV is pronounced as &#8220;duh-mad-vee&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>DMAIC<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The DMAIC project methodology has five phases:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.amberhill.biz\/Training14.jpg\" width=\"432\" height=\"312\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">D<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">efine<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">M<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">easure<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> key aspects of the current process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">nalyze<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the data to investigate and verify cause-and-effect relationships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">mprove<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> or optimize the current process based upon data analysis<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">C<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">ontrol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the future state process to ensure that any deviations from target are corrected before they result in defects. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>DMADV or DFSS<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The DMADV project methodology, also known as <a title=\"DFSS\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DFSS\">DFSS<\/a> (&#8220;<strong>D<\/strong>esign <strong>F<\/strong>or <strong>S<\/strong>ix <strong>S<\/strong>igma&#8221;), features five phases:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">D<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">efine<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> design goals that are consistent with customer demands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">M<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">easure<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> and identify CTQs (characteristics that are <strong>C<\/strong>ritical <strong>T<\/strong>o <strong>Q<\/strong>uality), product capabilities, production process capability, and risks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">A<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">nalyze<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> to develop and design alternatives, create a high-level design and evaluate design capability to select the best design.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">D<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">esign<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> details, optimize the design, and plan for design verification. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">V<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\">erify<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> the design<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Six Sigma is increasingly applied to service industries to ensure the customer receives an experience which exceeds her expectations.
